The Texas Center for Community Journalism at TCU is one of only four such centers in the United States dedicated to serving the small dailies and weeklies. Of Texas’ more-than-500 newspapers, at least 460 are community weeklies, semi-weeklies and dailies. The Center has a varied program of support for these newspapers, including the following elements:
We provide consulting services on everything from writing and editing problems to ethics issues to legal questions to Web support.
We specialize in helping newspapers develop their online editions, even to the point of programming our own content management system (much easier to use for non-technical types) and making it available free to community newspapers.
We conduct and support scholarly research into community newspaper issues, and are starting our own online scholarly journal in 2011 to encourage researchers to study community journalism.
We monitor hundreds of websites and distill out information we consider useful to community newspapers and make that available on our website.
We conduct workshops on everything from issues to the skills needed by journalists at work at community newspapers. Almost 200 community newspapers in Texas have sent at least one staff member to one or more workshops sponsored by the Center.
The best way to find out what the Center offers is through our website, tccj.tcu.edu. And best way to keep current on new workshops, contests and services is to “friend” the Center on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/communityjournalism).

Darla Walker has provided sales & marketing services to local businesses and media companies for over 3 decades – with over 15 years’ focus on “New Media” and Internet Marketing. She has expressed a passion for “everything local” in ad sales and development roles with Kansas City Star, Universal Press Syndicate, Knight Ridder Digital, Fort Worth Star Telegram, McClatchy Interactive and Share Velocity LLC, the marketing company she founded in 2009.
“Velocity Sales Training” programs leverage Darla’s work with ad sales teams through transformational shifts in virtually every aspect of local publishing. Each development, from the desk-bound “PC” in the ‘80’s through the truly portable digital developments of today, was explored for its value to local media and its advertisers. With a strong focus on the local impact of these changes, Darla is a vocal critic of business-as-usual-based sales tactics in today’s disruptive media environment.“For local media companies, the potential of ‘business-as-usual’ disappeared at the close of the 20th century,” she says.
Through Velocity Training and Coaching programs, Darla encourages ad sales executives to “have a revolution” – to approach sales assignments with the pro-active mindset of the entrepreneur and to throw down the passive, reactive mindset of the hired hand.
Whether you’re servicing customers’ needs through display ads, classified ads, digital ads or a mix, you will be liberated from outdated sales mediocrity by using 21st century sales tactics for quota-busting performance levels!
